Frankfurt

My friend John (Pearl Jam fan from London) was meeting me in Frankfurt. The plan was to explore Frankfurt for the day and then take the train to Cologne, however, his flight kept getting cancelled so he didn’t make it to Frankfurt until late at night which meant I was checking out Frankfurt SOLO.

After checking into the Townhouse Hotel, I wandered the town in search of the perfect waffle breakfast. I guess you could say I survived on waffles this trip. I came across Cafe Hauptwache and it was a win for me because they had waffles, a beautiful view of St. Katharinenkirche AND they provided blankets for the outdoor tables. After devouring my waffle dish I enjoyed sipping on hot coffee, bundled up in my blanket with superb people watching.

I made my way towards St. Pauls Church (Paulskirche.) The walking bridge leading from one church to the other was wonderfully lavish with colorful window flowers. The area had a few cute boutiques; one being this nutcracker shop.

Not far from St. Pauls is the Römerberg. A cobbled town square containing half timber wood buildings and the city hall. Although not located in the square, The Frankfurt Cathedral was visible and nearby.

My next and final stop was Eiserner Steg, an iron bridge covered in lockets. The lockets symbolize eternal love that cannot be broken. In most cases, the couple will write their initials or names on the lock and latch it to the bridge. They are even known to throw the key into the water which clarifies that it will never be undone (unless of course someone used a bolt cutter. HEARTBREAKER!)

I spent the rest of my afternoon on the trail along the river Main. The weather was perfect and the trees were bright with fall-colored leaves. I really miss fall. Ohio (my home state) is beautiful in the fall and Austin (current home) kind of skips the season. We go right from summer to winter. Well, a light winter. We never see snow but it can get cold. I found a bench near the water and laid there soaking in the sun, staring at the yellow and gold leaves above me. I could have fallen asleep on that bench.

John eventually made it to Frankfurt. We grabbed a couple brews and went to bed early. Our train to Cologne was leaving before dawn!
