Mexico City

I briefly describe this adventure in “Bee Girl” because it was my first crazed Pearl Jam trip. I did fly to New York City in September of 2015 to see Pearl Jam play at the Global Citizen Festival and that show is where I met several Pearl Jam fans (all equally or more crazy than myself.) One of those people is my good friend, Alfredo, who lives in L.A. He flew across the country to see Pearl Jam. What a crazy….oh, wait I guess I did fly from Texas, haha.

After NYC, Alfredo and I stayed in touch and watched a few of the Latin America shows on periscope. I was experiencing major FOMO and couldn’t take it anymore. I HAD to see Pearl Jam again. HAD TO OR I WAS GOING TO DIE! So what did we do? Alfredo and I booked flights to Mexico City for the final show of the tour. Chris, if you’re reading this, thanks for selling me your tickets! My mother was not happy, haha. I was actually flying home for Thanksgiving and ended up leaving early because Pearl Jam was calling my name.

Off she goes! Alfredo met me at the Mexico City Airport and we split a taxi to our hotel. Two other guys, Dom and Dan, were sharing the room with us. Dan is a hometown buddy of mine and I was ecstatic that he was making the trip! It was spontaneous for all of us. Dan was a Pearl Jam fan long before me and he introduced me to Leash. DROP THE LEASH!

We met a couple other jammers in the hotel lobby and we all took a taxi to the Pearl Jam Pre-Party. Holy smokes, SO. MANY. FANS. AND. SO. MANY. BEERS! I’ve been to a handful of pre-parties since this one but they’ve never been as wild. I made so many new friends that night including one of my besties, Rob Bleetstein (Sirius XM Pearl Jam Radio Host) AKA: The Rob. I see Rob in Austin more than most of my friends that live here, haha. Dude is a traveling, show guru.

I woke up the next morning with a slight hangover but the excitement for the show conquered the sickness. As I was getting ready I realized I didn’t have my wristlet and immediately my stomach dropped. Everything I owned was in that wristlet. The concert tickets, my PASSPORT, my drivers license, credit cards, all of my cash etc. LISTEN CAREFULLY- Do not EVER take your passport with you. Leave it in the hotel room safe and carry only copies of your passport. I learned my lesson and make five copies before every trip. You should also split up your money and only carry what is needed. The rest can also be stored in your hotel room safe. This was my first time out of the country and I really had no idea. Luckily my friend Ivan had my wristlet in the backseat of his car. I am so, so, so lucky.

Waiting in the GA line

Okay, that was a stressful start to the day. We lined up around 1030am and waited in line alllllll day for an attempt of getting rail (first row along the steel railing barrier for the PJ uninitiated.) There were so many people that security led us in like cattle. After passing the gates we all started running full speed to claim our spots. We ended up getting center rail and I cannot explain the energy. The show was held at Foro Sol with a sold out capacity of 62,400 people! The GA pit was so tight that I couldn’t even take a full breath. There literally wasn’t any room for me to expand my chest. Sweaty bodies all rubbing against each other, bouncing around, singing at the top of our lungs. We were crowdsurfing limp bodies to security guards because it was so hot and people were dropping like flies. This is still my number one show. Dan and I appeared on the Megatron during Animal- so fitting.

This show was a big deal for me because I had been expanding my Pearl Jam catalog since Global Citizen Festival. I finally knew more Pearl Jam than just Ten, Lightning Bolt and the Greatest Hits. I had been exploring their other albums and was getting into deeper cuts. Release, Small Town, Breakerfall, Corduroy, Throw Your Arms Around Me, Save You, Animal and Smile. These were very special to me.

The next day we explored as a crew. First stop- The National Museum of Anthropology. I wish we had more time in the museum but it really could take an entire day to see it all. There were so many displays, buildings, reading material etc. I think we spent two hours inside. Outside of the museum we saw Danza de los voladores (dance of the flyers) or Palo Volador (flying pole).

After the museum we went to lunch at Restaurant Tamayo which was nearby. The plates were exquisite. During lunch, a few other jammers informed us of a beer festival. Of course we were down and headed in that direction to Lienzo Charro de Constituyentes. I am not joking when I say this was a rodeo/beer festival/dance party all in one. It was strange…perfect for The Strangest Tribe. The rodeo ran in the arena below and the top of the venue held the beer festival with multiple beer vendors. Past the vendors showcased a DJ and dance floor. We were bustin’ moves and takin’ names! As a running joke we purchased the beer festival poster. Its like the Mexico City Holy Grail LOL.

Would you believe it if I told you Dan lost his wallet the next night? Like he didn’t learn from my mistake. He also got lucky and our friend Danealle grabbed it before leaving the uber. This was a quick trip but one for the books. I left knowing that I would travel anywhere in the world to see this band.
